Graduate students
The FACES Research Group recruits PhD students through Emory’s Environmental Sciences and Society (ESS) PhD program in the Department of Environmental Sciences. ESS is a full-time, interdisciplinary program that pairs the natural and social sciences through co-mentoring, community-engaged research and applied projects.
- Deadline: December 1 (11:59 pm Eastern). Applications open each September, and offers are usually made from late February through March.
- What you’ll need: a statement of purpose, a writing sample, three letters of recommendation and transcripts. The application asks you to name the faculty whose research fits yours.

- A short description of your research interests and career goals. If you could design your PhD research from scratch, what would you study? Why?
- Your CV
Prior experience in GIS, programming and statistics helps in the FACES Research Group, though it isn’t required.
Undergraduate students
Emory undergraduates interested in joining the research group should first take my Environmental Data Science course (ENVS 270). If you feel that you already have the basic skills covered in this course, send me an email with the following:
- Your resume
- A 1-2 page overview of (1) why you want to join the research group, (2) how your research interests align with the projects in the research group, (3) the specific skills you hope to acquire by joining the research group and (4) your plans post-Emory.

All postdoc positions in the research group are currently filled.
